Scheduler: Facebook Video Cover

Learn how to upload a video cover for Facebook Video Posts

Written by Karolina

In ZoomSphere, choosing your own video cover isn't a separate, fiddly step. It's built directly into the video post flow, and it takes about ten extra seconds.

Here's why it's worth those ten seconds and exactly how to do it. 👇🏼

Where the Facebook video cover actually shows up

  • Before autoplay kicks in – for the split second before a video loads and starts playing in the feed, especially on slower connections or mobile data

  • Before the video scrolls into view – while a user is still scrolling and the video hasn't reached the viewport yet

  • When autoplay is disabled – some users turn off autoplay or have data-saving mode on, so they only ever see the static cover until they tap

  • Link previews outside Facebook – when the video is shared via Messenger, WhatsApp, or pasted as a link elsewhere, the cover becomes the thumbnail

  • In the video (Reels) tab on the Page – videos don't autoplay here, so the cover is the only thing visible until someone clicks

  • Recommendations – "related videos" sections typically show a static cover rather than a live preview

How to Set a Custom Cover in ZoomSphere

The cover picker isn't buried in a settings menu — it appears automatically the moment your video finishes uploading, as part of the normal post-creation flow.

  1. Click Create Post and choose your Facebook Page as the source.

  2. Select a Video Post as a post type.

  3. Upload your video – from your computer, from ZS Files, Dropbox, or Google Drive.

  4. As soon as the video finishes uploading, a Video cover window opens automatically. From here, you have two options: drag the position marker along the timeline to grab any frame from the video itself, or click Upload cover to add a separate image you've designed specifically as a thumbnail.

  5. Click Update cover to confirm your choice, then carry on writing and scheduling the post as usual.

Changing the Cover After the Video Is Already Attached

Changed your mind after writing the caption? You don't have to remove and re-upload the whole video. Hover over the video preview inside the post editor, and use the image icon that appears on hover to reopen the same cover picker. This way, you can select a cover from the video, or you can upload your separate image! 👇🏼

Why it's worth setting

Even though Facebook now publishes most uploaded videos as Reels and autoplay handles a lot of the in-feed experience, the cover is what decides whether someone stops scrolling in the first place – and it's the only visual a viewer sees in every placement where autoplay doesn't apply.

A blurry auto-generated frame (which is what Facebook picks by default if you don't set one) can undercut an otherwise strong video before it even gets a chance to play. Setting a deliberate cover – a clear, high-contrast frame or a custom thumbnail with a hook – is a small effort that protects click-through and watch-through across every one of those non-autoplay moments.

A Few Practical Tips

  • Keep the custom cover image under 10 MB, and as close as possible to your video's own aspect ratio (9:16 up to 16:9) so Facebook doesn't crop it awkwardly.

  • Design custom covers the same way you'd design any other thumbnail: bold focal point, minimal text, and consistent styling with your other recent posts so your Page feed feels like one cohesive stream rather than a grab-bag of random freeze-frames.

  • Do this before you schedule, not after – a strong cover is part of what gets a video watched in the first place, not a finishing touch you bolt on later.

None of this adds a real extra step to your workflow. It's the same upload flow you're already using, with one small decision inserted at exactly the right moment. Given how much a thumbnail can move the needle on whether a video gets watched at all, it's ten seconds well spent. 😊
